about

You were the writing on the wall”

A graffitied message flicked a switch in the head of Robin Jax, aka RobinPlaysChords, which led to the creation of a song entitled Teardrop Girl-Star. Nearly four years after its initial conception, that song’s name graces the release of the brand new RobinPlaysChords EP.

Teardrop Girl-Star remained in stasis until Robin laid down tracks with Mason Le Long (Batsch) in Leamington Spa in February 2014. It is a track that exists in the vastness of an imagined post-nuclear apocalypse, with the occasional volcano rumbling in its landscape. A plaintive ode to the titular and metaphysical companion, Robin sings the siren song as they wander “across the darkness of the lunar sea”, until a volcano erupts and a stream of guitar notes burn away before a climactic chord signals the dying of the fires.

Along with this, the even older Mercurial Son was also put to record. Its propulsive rhythm and steamrolling instrumental lines have made it a live favourite, and the layers of sound that form its ear-crushing outro are sharpened by Le Long’s mix, the “white noise breaks” buzzing away as if they’re escaping the speakers altogether. The final maelstrom dies away with a exhaling harmonic strum breathing its last as a series of notes.

“If you’re expecting rapture, then follow me” goes the chorus of the lead track. Where RobinPlaysChords will take you is beyond your expectations.

The 12" vinyl edition features exclusive remixes from Fabrizio Modonese Palumbo ((r), Larsen) and Raf and O.

Robin sings words that beckon you closer, to come forward across seemingly impassable distances. ... more

Track Name: Teardrop Girl-Star
You were the writing on the wall
Six long years to go
Count it soft and slowly
Let the days ebb and flow
Teardrop Girl-Star
Where was your year zero?
Your heart and its love alone
Still won't save the world
But between the finer lines
And the foot prints that we leave behind
You'll lead me by the hand and sing a siren's song
And I will sing along
If you're expecting rapture, then follow me
Across the darkness of the lunar sea
If you're exploding outward, follow me
Across the darkness of the lunar sea
Track Name: Mercurial Son
This will hurt just a little
This will work if you let it
Open up to perfect strangers
Exchange these notes for heaven
Left the centre days ago
Sit and watch borrowed media
To occupy my grey matter
And count down time until it kicks again
Day will fade into shadow
These will rise all around you
Darkness hides every devil
White noise breaks will confound you
This number one hit that kicks inside you
You'll remember
