about

Warwickshire-based musician Robin Jax, aka RobinPlaysChords, first saw the words "Teardrop Girl-Star" written in spray paint on a wall near Coventry Airport in 2010. This non sequitur set off a burst of creativity and marked the outset of a project that took nearly six years to complete.

Ahead of the release of Teardrop Girl-Star LP on 10th February 2017 comes "Lost At Sea". A winding guitar figure plays over the rumbling drums of Max Doohan (Noctürn), coupled to some of Robin's most evocative lyrical imagery yet - "silver wires and golden chains" tying the narrator down in coral reef, recalling the homophonic "lunar sea" of its parent album's title track. Drowned backing vocals guide the song's second half like celestial sirens singing sailors to danger, leading to a climax with a fatalistic bent ("In your heart/you must/give in").

The somewhat surrealist swirl of "Lost At Sea" is in stark contrast to its B-side "Institute Of Cultural Anxiety" - a noisy and sensorily overwhelming instrumental that just missed the cut for the album. Inspired by the Jeremy Millar-curated exhibition of the same name and a half-memory of Wilco's infamous "Less Than You Think", guitar strings clang and groan under the strain of heavy distortion before collapsing into a sparse ringing that disappears over the horizon, leaving the chaos behind.

Within the creation of Teardrop Girl-Star LP, "Lost At Sea" took five years to make the leap from paper to record. In its three minute running time, it makes an impression that will last a lifetime.

Robin Jax’s exploits as RobinPlaysChords have been built on a slow but steady sonic development. Building on the release of 2014's "Teardrop Girl-Star EP", the forthcoming "Teardrop Girl-Star LP" is the culmination of six years of fine tuning a remarkably focused sound. Robin sings words that beckon you closer, to come forward across seemingly impassable distances. ... more

Track Name: Lost At Sea (edit)
Praise be yours to keep in case of danger
Sweetness pressed into your mouth by a stranger
March into the sea at will
Hope your heart can love me still
Go beyond the looking glass

Waving white flags to the sky, I'll give way
Bind my hands with silver wires and golden chains
Crawl into the space beneath
Lay me down in coral reef
Below this dying sun

The winds are still
But the weight of life wills
That in your heart
You must
Give in
